Receipts - Receipts Work statement Man is by nature a social animal. A myriad of relationships between individuals, individual and society, and societies exist. The relations are forged within a society and there are many ways and positions to lead a social life. The boundaries of such free judgment, however, are one’s direct and indirect experiences. The society one partakes in serves as a standard to unwittingly determine one’s set of values; and what lies beyond will be elusive, whatever the circumstances. Being a free thinker and an autonomous agent is only possible under the predetermined standard of one’s society. Analyzing a society as a single or several structures or systems has a long and diverse tradition since the modern times - from Karl Marx to Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault. But one must delve into how an individual exists, has existed, and will exist as a self-determining agent in a society prior to the consideration of structures or systems. Definitions sometimes vary according to the times and conditions. Developments and its undercurrents deemed real may later take on shifting interpretations, and various points in one’s reality are construed differently with time. On the contrary, a single trait may represent a day and age. Today’s society is defined with terms such as globalization, diversity, freedom, media, and capitalism. A society may not be defined by any single factor - each is defined as part of interactions like that between individuals, and such exchanges also bring about creation or extinction. But the question remains of how to define individuals amidst the crowd of terms defining a society. What are the differences between individuals of modern and contemporary times? Would the two be identical save for the social structure? What significance do individuals hold in a society created by men? Jean Paul Sartre (2007, p.27) wrote that “existence comes before essence – or, if you will, that we must begin from the subjective.” Observing who we are in relation to the society we live in today will lead us to the identity of an individual in the contemporary world. Reality of an individual Human reality as accumulated individual experience is represented, in the words of Jean Baudrillard (1994), in the signs and images consumed. An experience (sign/image) creates another, and the new set begets another; until reaching a point where the reality is no longer differentiated from the sign and image, generating simulacra that are more real than reality itself. The world today is one of simulacra and simulation that is brimming with signs and images without the reality. This leads to the question what is the most crucial sign and image to the contemporary? There are many terms that represent today’s society. But the one that is the most indispensable yet associated with an array of pathological phenomenon; offering both convenience and limitations is money. Money and Desire Money underpins a capitalist society. The proposition is reminiscent of personalities such as Karl Marx, Georg Simmel, and Marx Webber from the days of transition from the modern to contemporary when the bourgeoisie were emerging. Their ideas having been tweaked here and there remain relevant today. How does the capital - or more blatantly, money - shape our lives and existence? It is said that the necessities of life are feed, lodge, and clothe; but there is one other important element today, which is desire. ‘Lefevbre argued that ‘Human beings have complex and multifaceted need and desires, the pursuit of which makes them richer and more fulfilled individuals.’(Gardiner, 2000, p.81) His view was that ‘Capitalism, needless to say, encourages the attainment of human desire only through the medium of capital, which leads to the fetishization of money and commodities.’ (Ibid, p.81) Then aside from the question of what induces such desires, what are the marks of the desires? Georg Simmel (1990) said that money enables more individual freedom. However, a greater volume of desire permeates the society compared to the increased personal freedom, and desire continues to beget another form of desire just as money makes more money and requires more money. Proof of an exchange Consumption occurs in multitude directions from daily necessities to extravagant items. Another common form today is the consumption of services such as renting a home or a car, or booking hotels and flights for travel. Making a purchase gives one the possession of a tangible object until the value has been exhausted - a call the purchaser makes. Other than which, what consumption leaves us with is a fragment of the satisfied memory in the moment (though there may also be a photograph or a video). This may have been egged on within the social structure, or may be traced to a genuine individual need. Money is gained whether through labor, capital, or other means. The money exchanged with one’s values is then deployed accordingly to one’s needs. The possessed money will eventually be spent. The goods and services exchanged may be a home, a car, appliances for the home, or a memory of a trip. Money must be earned again to meet more desires. The repetition of such gratified and used desires is evocative of objects that are discarded and replaced in the short cycle of changing desires; and is manifested in the form of a receipt that is merely the evidence of the simple transaction that took place. I discard, therefore I am The constantly printed receipt is a trace of one’s life and evidence of fulfilled desires. If a sign has been consumed, it leaves behind another signage that is the receipt. There is a receipt for every act of consumption. The slip is a shadow to how one has spent. Receipts take form as do the objects, and will too be discarded. (There are those who cling onto receipts, as there are those who cannot bring themselves to depart with their belongings.) The concept is one of accumulation, different from the act of collecting. It is one more type of accumulation regarding one’s being. There is a strange sense of nostalgia for the discarded. From objects out-of-place to objects abandoned upon losing practical value - this work attempts to shed light on the contemporary capitalist society while paying tribute to the discarded. The trail of letters in a crumpled receipt - even if it still of use to the owner - is suggestive of one’s existence and the inundating desires showcased by the soon to be wasted objects. Rene Descartes’ proposition Cogito ergo sum may well be “I discard, therefore I am.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 작업노트 인간은 사회적 동물이다. 사회 속에서 개인-개인, 개인-사회, 사회-사회 등의 다양한 관계를 맺으며 살아간다. 이 모든 관계들이 사회 속에서 이뤄지며 이런 사회를 살아가는 다양한 방법과 의견들이 존재한다. 하지만 우리는 오직 우리가 직/간접적으로 경험한 범위 내에서만 자유롭게 판단하고 생활한다. 우리가 속한 사회는 자신도 모르게 우리의 가치를 결정하는 하나의 기준이 되며 그 기준 밖의 것은 어떠한 경우에도 우리 스스로의 것이 될 수 없다. 즉, 우리가 자유롭게 생각하고 주체적으로 살고 있다는 것은 우리가 속한 사회나 집단 속에서 이미 결정되어 있는 기준 아래서만 가능한 것이다. 사회를 하나 혹은 여러개의 구조나 시스템으로써 분석하고 탐구하는 것은 근대 이후 지속적으로 다양하게 이어져온 부분이다. 막스Marx에서부터 바르트Barthes, 푸코Foucault 등에 이르기까지 많은 학자들과 의견들이 존재한다. 하지만 이러한 구조나 시스템 이전에 우리는 사회 속에서 스스로가 어떻게 하나의 인간으로서, 스스로 판단하고 결정하는 개별 주체로써 존재하는지, 존재해왔는지 그리고 존재해나가는지를 생각해봐야만 한다. 어떤 사실은 시대와 상황에 따라 다르게 정의된다. 진실로 믿어졌던 현상과 그 이면의 것들이 시간이 지나면서 다른 것으로 해석되어지기도 하며 현실의 많은 순간들은 시간에 따라 매번 다른 의미로 해석된다. 하지만 반대로 생각하면 어떠한 특징 하나가 그 시대를 나타내는 것이 될 수도 있는 것이다. 현대 사회는 세계화, 다양성, 자유, 미디어, 자본주의 등 다양한 말들로 정의된다. 이들 중 한가지만으로 사회는 정의될 수 없으며 개인과 마찬가지로 상호관계 속에 각자가 정의되고 또한 상호관계를 통해 다른 새로운 것들을 만들어내기도 하고 반대로 소멸시키기도 한다. 하지만 사회를 정의하는 수많은 말들 속에서 개인은 어떻게 정의되는지에 대한 의문은 여전히 남아있다. 근대의 개인과 현대의 개인은 어떤 차이점을 갖고 있는가? 사회적 구조를 제외하면 여전히 동일한 인간인가? 인간 스스로가 만들어 낸 사회 속에서 개인은 어떤 의미를 갖고 있는가? 사르트르Sartre의 유명한 말 “존재는 실존에 우선한다.”로부터 시작하여 ‘나 스스로에 대한’ 정체성을 현대사회의 어떠한 관계 속에서 확인할 수 있는지를 살펴보면 적어도 현대사회를 살아가는 개인의 정체성에 대한 실마리는 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 개인의 경험이 축적된 개개인의 현실은, 보드리야르Baudrillard의 의견을 빌자면, 그들이 소비하고 있는 기호와 이미지로 대변된다고 할 수 있다. 하나의 경험(기호/이미지)은 또 다른 경험(기호/이미지)를 만들어내고 이렇게 생겨난 경험(기호/이미지)는 또 새로은 기호/이미지를 만들어 낸다. 결국 실재와 기호/이미지를 구별할 수 없는 단계에 이르게 되고, 점점 더 실재보다 더 실재적인 초과실재(Simulacra)가 생겨나게 된다. 실재가 없는 기호/이미지만이 넘치는 세계가 바로 우리의 시대, 즉 시뮬라크라와 시뮬라시옹의 시대이다. 그렇다면 현대인에게 있어서 핵심적인 기호와 이미지는 어떤것인가. 현대 사회를 잘 나타낼 수 있는 단어들은 위에서 말한 것들 외에도 여러가지가 있다. 하지만 이러한 것들 중에 현대 사회를 살아가는데 있어서 없어서는 안되는 것임과 더불어 여러 병리적 현상들을 만들어내며 편의와 제약을 동시에 만들어내는 가장 핵심적인 것은 바로 돈이다. 자본주의 사회란 돈이 그 기본이 되는 사회이다. 돈과 자본과 관련해서 가장 먼저 떠오르는 이는 막스 Marx, 짐멜Simmel, 베버Webber 등 근대사회 이후 현대로 넘어오면서 부르주아가 나타나기 시작하는 초기 자본주의에 대한 이론가들이 가장 먼저 떠오를 것이다. 하지만 이들의 생각은 조금씩 변화를 거듭해오며 지금까지 이어져오고 있으며 여전히 유효한 부분이 많다. 이들이 얘기하는 자본, 쉽게 말해 돈은 어떤 방식으로 우리를 살아가게 그리고 존재하게 하는 것일까. 사람이 살아가기 위해 꼭 필요한 것이 의식주라고 한다. 현대 사회에는 이 이외에 다른 중요한 한가지가 더 존재하는데 이것은 바로 욕망이다. 르페브르Lefevbre는 ‘인간은 복잡하고 다면적인 필요와 욕망을 가지고 있다. 그리고 이것들의 추구는 그들을 더 부유하고 충만한 개인으로 만들어준다.’라고 주장하며 '말할것도 없이 자본주의는 돈과 상품의 숭배를 이끄는 자본을 매개로 인간의 욕망의 획득을 장려한다.'라고 했다.(가디너Gardiner, p.81) 그렇다면 이러한 욕망을 불러일으키는 원인은 차치하고 이 욕망은 우리에게 어떤 것을 남겨주는 것일까. 짐멜Simmel은 돈이 있으므로써 개인의 자유가 많아진다고 말했다. 하지만 돈을 통해 사람들의 자유가 늘어난것보다 더 많은 양의 욕망이 우리 사회를 차지하고 있고 돈이 돈을 만들고 필요로하는 것처럼 욕망이 또다른 욕망을 지속적으로 생성해 내고 있는 것이다. 사람들의 소비는 생필품에서부터 시작해서 사치품까지 다양한 방향으로 이뤄진다. 또한 이 뿐만 아니라 집이나 차를 렌트하거나 여행을 위해 호텔을 예약하고 항공권을 구매하는 등 다양한 서비스에 대한 소비도 오늘날의 보편적 소비행태 중 하나이다. 생필품이든 사치품이든 물건을 사면 그 물건의 가치가 다 할 때까지는 – 그 물건의 가치가 언제까지 지속될지는 전적으로 구매자에게 달려있지만 - 하나의 손에 잡을 수 있는 물건으로 우리에게 남아있다. 하지만 그 외의 소비가 우리에게 남겨주는 것은 그 순간의 만족감을 포함한 기억 – 때로는 사진이나 동영상일수도 있겠지만 – 뿐이다. 이 모든 것들은 어쩌면 사회 구조 속에서 부추겨진 것일 수도 있고 진정 개인이 필요로 했기 때문일 수도 있다. 노동을 통해서든 자본을 통해서든 아니면 다른 어떤 방식을 통해서든 사람들은 돈을 얻었고 자신의 어떤 가치와 바꾼 돈을 각자의 필요에 따라 다른 방식으로 사용한다. 가진 돈은 언젠가는 쓰여지기 마련이고 돈으로 바꾼 재화나 서비스는 집일수도 있고 차일 수도 있으며 집을 채우는 물건일수도 또는 여행의 기억일 수도 있다. 또한 이러한 욕망을 충족시키기 위해 사람들은 또 돈을 벌기 위해 노력한다. 이렇게 충족되고 사용되는 욕망의 반복은 어쩌면 그 욕망의 변화 주기만큼이나 빨리 버려지고 새로 바뀌는 물건과 다를바 없으며 이는 결국 단순 교환의 증명일 뿐인 영수증의 모습과도 같다. 영수증은 우리의 삶의 흔적이자 우리가 살아가는데 있어서는 없어서는 안 될 것 뿐만 아니라 우리의 욕망을 충족시켜주는 모든 부분에 대한 증명이다. 만약 어떤 기호를 소비한 것이라면 그 기호는 영수증이라는 또 다른 기호로 남는다. 소비한 것 이면에는 항상 영수증이 남아있으며 영수증은 소비의 그림자처럼 그 뒤를 따라다닌다. 영수증은 물건과 마찬가지로 모습을 가지고 있고 또한 그와 마찬가지로 버려진다.(물건을 잘버리지 못하는 이들이 있는 것처럼 영수증을 잘버리지 못하는 이들도 있다.) 이는 수집과는 다른 개념의 축적이라고 할 수 있다. 바로 우리 삶에 대한, 존재하는 방식에 대한 또 하나의 축적물인 것이다. 우리는 버려진 물건들에 대해 묘한 향수를 갖는다. 제자리에 있지 않은 물건들과 그 물건의 소유자로부터 활용가치를 상실하여 버려진 것들에 이르기까지. 이 작업은 현대 자본주의 사회에 대한 것임과 동시에 모든 버려진 물건에 대한 것이다. 비록 아직사용가치가 다 하진 않아 버려지진 않았을지라도, 버려진 영수증 속의 글자의 흐름을, 흔적들을 보고 있노라면 한 개인의 삶의 일부분이 또렷히 들여다보이고 아울러 영수증과 같이 곧 버려질 그 물건들이, 그리고 세상을 가득채우고 있는 욕망들이 함께 비쳐보인다. standardized. The rapidly changing urbanity offers as many opportunities, but is also enough to instill a sense of fear of being left behind. The organic city bestows roles to its societies and individuals to ensure its own survival, and the individual in turn gains relief of belonging by fulfill these roles. There are times an urbanite seeks to leave the city due to recognition of the self or doubt over the hectic lifestyle, but ultimately the individual who chose the urban life will come to terms that he or she will not break away from the bustle and will focus on his or her role as an urbanite than looking inwards. Such a course of voluntarily but bounded procedures serves to mandate the standard systems. The wording that ‘individuals may demand the right to liberty and to be accepted in their uniqueness, whereas society may only recognise them as a component, subject to its supra-individual laws’ (Simmel, 2007, p.160) applies not only to the overall society of today, but well-illustrates the relationship between the individual and society in a contemporary city. Today’s cities ‘can be collectively orchestrated without being the product of the organizing action of a conductor’ (Bourdieu, 1990, p.53). An individual’s urban life is an interaction between the city dwellers as Goffman(1990) or Garfinkel(1984) said. Actions are not solely of oneself or for oneself; but are evidently aware of others even if not undertaken for the sake of others. Daily lives are shaped in the relationship of the self and others, and thereby hold significance. To adjust to a rapidly-changing city and to meet one’s motivations – or goals – of choosing such a life, one learns to let part of him or her go. Individual lives derived from relationships – the individuality that have been reverted to society – form our social foundation. ‘Actually the basic unit of a group is not the complete human person but only a portion of him—that portion which conforms to the common aspirations. To the extent that an individual belongs much of him drops out of the picture. This is not disproved by the fact that many a party member devotes himself body and soul to the Cause; the impassioned partisan expunges part of his possibilities to play his part wholly’ (Kracauer, 1995, p.22). The extent of belonging depends on the goals and the size of aspiration one seeks in the city. Then would the expunged parts come together in a society as a whole individual? This leads to the question of whether an identity and values set within a relationship exist only as part of the society and no longer as an individual. The answer to if uniquely individual values persist in a web of complex relationships may be found from a stranger. Perhaps all urbanites are strangers. City dwellers chose as such because their livelihoods are in the city or what they seek may be found with greater ease in the city. Their days are shaped not because that is how it has been done thus far, but as a choice to be different. Such difference may be deemed identical under the umbrella of a city, but we all aspire for something that is set apart of the standardized form of a city. We let ourselves to be taken by the tide of the urban flow saying that “I want something different” without even knowing what that difference would be. This, however, is their value and existence. And this is the source of the sense of being a stranger. ‘The aspects of things that are most important for us are hidden because of their simplicity and familiarity. (One is unable to notice something—because it is always before one's eyes.) The real foundations of his enquiry do not strike a man at all. Unless that fact has at some time struck him. And this means: we fail to be struck by what, once seen, is most striking and most powerful’ (Wittgenstein, 1986, p.50). This work is about such hidden elements. It is about what we know but fail to found; the value and existence that are in us but lay unearthed as we move along with the fast pace of the city. As noted, all urbanites are foreigners. They conform to their society and give up certain parts of oneself in that feat. To be assimilated in today’s ever-shifting environment is to let go of a certain self. This is tantamount to forgoing one’s holistic existence and becoming a stranger in the city. This suggests the collision between individual and urban values; and this is more acute in true strangers in a substantial sense than those who are simply outsiders. Those who were born and raised in the city have absorbed its ways, conformed, and lead their lives without many ups and downs. These rules are the history of the society and the individual. The history of the society is not tumultuous within a short frame of time, and you may lead a comfortable life once you go along with the tide. But strangers may not avoid the collision between the individual history and that of the new society. Even as cities have come to offer similar life styles with globalization, previous individual value is bound to conflict in a new environment. To forsake who you had been to be part of a new society is an impossible feat even to strangers. To transform one’s history and the system that has grown on you lies beyond one’s scope of will power. In a new surrounding a person’s original values and existence are kept away. This could be in a photograph, in space where one’s building a new life, or in a prized possession. This serves as a means to retain one’s original value or to confirm where one stands at the moment. It is ‘a certain matter that acts as an analogon, as an equivalent of perception’ (Sartre, 2004, p.18) to an individual. A space is the sum of its present and the past. Such sums may drive us toward a more uniform world; but from an individual perspective in a society, it is a barometer of where and how our values persist. This is more prominent in strangers, but it also is a hint into how the rest of us found respite in the society, and confirm and safe-keep part of our values. Individual life is vested in the society, but is also valid in itself. It is just that urbanites fail to discover what is laying before them. The Temporary Londoner is the work regarding individuals living in the city of London with the specific objective of gaining an education. They all come from different backgrounds and live in the metropolis with each of their own goals like any other urbanite. The items that have chosen as strangers are not those of London or are pricey, but what still breathes of their pasts. Their living spaces add their own rules and conventions to that of a contemporary Londoner to preserve each identity and value. They are currently Londoners, but nobody can tell if they will go on to stay in the city. But what is certain is that their value and existence will converge with the city to create something new and another chapter in individual history. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 작업노트 도시는 하나의 살아움직이는 유기체임과 동시에 정형화된 공간이다. 빠르게 변화하는 도시의 모습은 하나의 개인에게 그 속도만큼의 기회를 제공하지만 자칫하면 그가 속한 사회에서 도태될 수 있다는 불안감을 심어주기에 충분하다. 유기체로써의 도시는 그 스스로의 생존을 위해 도시 안의 사회와 개인에게 역할을 부여하고, 개인은 그 역할을 충실히 수행함으로써 개인이 그 도시에 속해있다는 안도감을 얻는다. 때로는 개인의 자신의 존재에 대한 자각에 의해, 혹은 바쁜 삶에 대한 회의감 등으로 도시를 벗어나기를 꿈꾸기도 하지만 결국 도시인이 되기를 스스로 선택한 개인은 스스로가 선택한 삶이기에 벗어날 수 없는 곳으로 간주하고 자기자신에 집중하기보다 도시인으로써의 역할을 수행하는데 더 집중한다. 이런 자율적이지만 결코 자유롭지만은 않은 일련의 과정들은 정형화된 시스템을 지킬 수 있게끔 강제하는 역할을 충실히 수행한다. ‘사회에서 개인은 자유와 특수성의 권리를 요구한다. 반면 사회는 그를 단지 초개인적인 사회적 법칙에 예속된 요소로 인정하려 한다.'(짐멜Simmel, 2007:15)는 말은 오늘날 사회 전체를 아우르는 말임과 동시에 특히 현대 도시에서의 개인과 사회의 관계를 가장 잘 드러낸 표현이라고 할 수 있다. 즉, 오늘날의 도시는 ‘지휘 없이 이루어지는 자발적인 오케스트레이션’ (Bourdieu 1990:53)이다. 이러한 도시에서 개인의 일상은 고프만Goffman이나 가핑클Garfinkel이 말했듯이 사회구성원들의 상호작용 속에서 만들어진다. 개인의 행동은 개인만의 것이라거나 순수하게 자기자신을 위한 것이라기보다는 타인을 위하는 것은 아닐지라도 분명 타인을 의식하는 행위들이다. 개인과 타인의 관계 속에서 일상은 만들어지고 이를 통해 비로소 사회 속에서 개별 일상에 대한 의미가 부여된다. 빠르게 변화하는 도시에 적응하며 살아가기 위해, 그리고 변화무쌍한 도시의 삶을 선택하게끔한 개인의 동기—달리말해 자신의 목적달성—를 위해 개인은 자기자신의 일정부분을 포기하고 살아간다. 타인과의 관계에 따른 개별 일상에 대한 의미, 즉 사회의 일부로 환원된 개인의 일부가 모여 사회가 지탱되는 근간이 되는 것이다. 실제로 집단의 기본 단위는 온전한 인격적 개인이 아니라 개인의 한 부분—집단적 염원에 부응하는 부분—이다. 개인의 ‘소속’정도가 클수록 개인의 더 많은 부분이 시야에서 사라진다. 대의에 혼신을 다하는 당원이 많다는 사실이 그에 대한 반론이 되지는 못한다. 열혈 당원은 자신의 역할을 온전하게 이행하기 위해 자신의 가능성 일부를 저버린다.(크라카우어Kracauer, 2012:38) 여기서 개인의 ‘소속’정도는 개인이 도시에서 이루고자 하는 목표와 염원의 크기에 달려있다고 할 수 있다. 그렇다면 개인에게서 사라진 부분들은 오롯이 사회에 귀속되어 그 합이 하나의 개인을 이루게 되는 것일까? 타인과의 관계 속에 설정된 개인의 정체성과 가치는 더이상 개인으로 존재하지 않고 사회의 일부로만 존재 가능한 것일까하는 의문이 생겨나게 된다. 복잡한 관계로 구성된 사회 속에서 개인만의 가치는 실재하는 것인지에 대한 의문에 대한 답은 이방인으로부터 찾을 수 있다. 어쩌면 모든 도시인은 이방인일지도 모른다. 도시인들은 그들의 삶의 터전이 도시이기 때문에, 그들이 얻고자 하는 것이 도시 안에 더 많이 있기 때문에 도시를 선택하고 그 도시 안에서 살아간다. 그렇게 살아왔기 때문에 살아가는 것이 아닌 다르게 살아가기 위해 선택하고 그들만의 일상을 만들어 간다. 비록 이 다르다는 것이 ‘도시’라는 이름 아래 묶여 모두 같은 것으로 치부되더라도 정형화된 도시의 모습과는 다른 무엇인가를 늘 바라고 원한다. 바라는 ‘무엇’이 무엇인지도 모른채 ‘나는 무엇인가 다른 것을 원해’라고 말하며 도시의 흐름 속에 몸을 맡긴채 살아간다. 하지만 이 무엇인가가 바로 그들 자신의 가치이며 존재이다. 그리고 이러한 것들이 그들 스스로를 이방인으로 느끼게 만드는 근원이다. 우리에게 가장 중요한 사물들의 측면들은 그 단순성과 일상성으로 인하여 숨겨져 있다. 우리는 그것들을 깨달을 수 없다. 왜냐하면 그것은 언제나 우리 눈앞에 있기 때문이다. 사람에게 자신의 탐구의 진정한 기초는 전혀 눈에 띄지 않는다. 이 사실이 언젠가 그의 눈에 띄지 않는다면. 그리고 이는, 한번 눈에 띄면 가장 이목을 끌며 가장 강력한 것이 우리 눈에 들어오지 않고 있음을 뜻한다. (비트겐슈타인Wittgenstein, 1993[1968] Philosophical Investigation:85) 이 작업은 바로 이런 숨겨진 것들에 대한 것이다. 우리가 알고 있으면서도 찾지 못하는 것들, 이미 우리 안에 숨쉬고 있지만 도시의 빠른 흐름을 함께하느라 미처 발견하지 못하고 있는 가치와 존재에 대한 것이다. 앞서 말했듯이 모든 도시인들은 하나의 이방인으로써 살아간다. 자신이 속한 사회에 충실해야하고 사회에 속하기 위해 자신의 일부를 포기한다. 오늘날 ‘사회에 동화된다는 것’은 –특히 급변하는 도시 환경 속에서—사회의 구성원이 되기 위해 자신의 존재의 일부를, 가치의 일부를 내려놓는 것이다. 이 내려놓음으로 인해서 개인은 완전한 개인으로서의 존재를 포기하는 것이며 필연적으로 도시에 속한 이방인이 되기를 자처한다. 이는 개인과 도시의 가치의 충돌을 의미하며 이러한 현상은 ‘진정한 이방인’, 즉 단순한 변방자outsider라기 보다 실제적 의미에서의 이방인stranger에서 더욱 극명하게 드러날 수 있다. 왜냐하면 한 도시에서 나고 자란 이들은 태어날 때부터 그 도시의 생리를 몸으로 흡수하여 그 안에서의 규칙에 순응하며 대개 큰 흔들림 없이 살아가기 때문이다. 이러한 규칙들은 한 사회의 역사이자 개인의 역사이기도 하다. 많은 경우 사회의 역사는 짧은 기간 속에서는 잔잔하게 흘러가고 이에 따라 개인 또한 이 흐름에 몸을 맡기기만 하면 큰 어려움없이 사회 속에서 살아갈 수 있다. 하지만 이방인의 경우 개인의 역사와 현재는 새로운 사회와의 충돌을 피할 수 없다. 글로벌화로 인해 전세계가, 특히 많은 도시들이 비슷한 삶을 영유하게 되었음에도 개인의 기존 가치는 새로운 환경과 충돌을 피할 수 없다. 새로운 사회에 편입되기 위해 ‘과거의 자신’을 버리는 것은 적응을 해야만 하는 이방인이라고 할지라도 불가능한 일이다. 개인의 역사를 바꾸는 것, 몸에 밴 체계를 버리는 것은 개인의 의지의 범위를 벗어나는 일이다. 새로운 사회에서 개인의 기존 가치와 존재는 어떤 곳에 간직되거나 숨겨진다. 아마도 이곳은 사진 한 장일 수도 있을 것이고 새롭게 정착하면서 또 다른 삶을 시작하는 공간이 될 수도 있을 것이며 소중히 간직해온 어떤 물건일 수도 있다. 이는 자신의 기존의 가치를 유지하는 수단이자 자신의 현재의 존재를 확인하는 수단으로 활용된다. 이러한 것들은 개인에서 하나의 아날로공으로, 즉 지각의 등가물로 작용하는 어떤 소재(사르트르Sartre, 2010:48)로써 작용하는 것이다. 이방인의 공간은 그 공간이 속한 현재와 또 다른 과거의 종합이다. 어쩌면 이러한 종합들이 세계를 더 비슷하게 만들어나가는 원동력으로 작용하는 것일지도 모르지만 사회 속의 개인의 관점에서 볼 때 개인의 가치는 어디서 어떤 식으로 보존되고 유지되며 종합되는지 바라볼 수 있는 부분이기도 하다. 이는 이방인에게서 더욱 극명하게 드러나는 것이지만 일반적인 도시인들이 사회 속에서 어떻게 쉴 곳을 찾고 자신의 가치를 확인하며 일부를 보관하는지에 대한 힌트를 얻을 수도 있을 것이다. 개인의 일상은 사회에 귀속되어 있지만 여전히 개인으로써의 일상도 유효하다. 단지 도시인들이 언제나 눈앞에 있는 그것들을 발견하지 못하고 있는 것 뿐이다. It aims to show that a number of casually passing desires, albeit trivial like pieces of receipts, form individuals' history. Discovering the spiritual meaning of individuals, that is not controlled by desires manipulated by social encouragement, is most crucial in re-establishing everyday life in the modern society. To perceive one's existence in the modern consumerist society, individuals must play bigger roles in looking at the complicated society. That is how individuals can fully utilize freedom presented by modern society to enrich their everyday life. This work aims at showing the everyday life as it is. "As it is", means the reality as it is seen without any excuses or anything hidden. Something as it is can sometimes be harsh and sometimes be a chance to rediscover what was unknown or forgotten.'The limits of my language mean the limits of my world. ' (Wittgenstein, 1971, p.68) As such, the words and sentences I use are limited to the world I know. Images also can only be expressed from one's own perspective based on what he sees and experiences, but they have other meanings from writings, which describe something as it is. In a sense, the phrase "as it is" may be confined as a part of Bourdieu's habitus. 'The most improbable practices are therefore excluded, as unthinkable, by a kind of immediate submission to order that inclines agents to make a virtue of necessity, that is, to refuse what is anyway denied and to will the inevitable.' (Bourdieu, 1990, p.54) However, what I have can be unfamiliar to others, and considering the characteristics of social actions which tend to benefit more from mutual relationships, images, that can more easily be widely distributed than writing, can help people identify themselves by presenting different perspectives to others. And due to the nature of photographs as a medium, which is a reproduction of reality, these images are all the more appropriate to show and prove objects "as they are". Undisclosed Desires is literally about numerous desires, which definitely exist but do not emerge on an individual's everyday life. No matter how easily a desire can be realized so that it is so ordinary to some people, let alone those who desire many things, it is necessary to see what these desires are aimed at in the modern society where a desire breeds another. These are trivial things that end up easily realized in everyday life, but considering that a number of desires that casually pass by shape an individual's history, understanding where these desires are going would play an important role in forming an individual's everyday life going forward. This work is intended to show these things abstractly to depict the ambiguity of modern everyday life and hidden signals of desire. Individual titles of the work are also in line with the traces of individual everyday life. One's possessions in everyday life such as Everyday objects, Books and what he desires such as Picnic, Travel, Car, and Baby, an individual surrounded by consumption from the day he is born, and Triumph, an attempt to paradoxically show everyday life where consumption out of desire is prioritised. (Sartre, 2003, p.494) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Excerpt from "Everyday consumption within contemporary capitalism" (2014) View full version ==================================================================================================================== 작업노트 ‘Undisclosed Desires’라는 제목의 작업은 특히 글로벌화된 자본주의 시대에서 현대인의 일상을 생산과 소비 과정을 통하여 들여다보는 과정을 통해 현대인의 모호한 일상성과 숨겨진 욕망의 기호를 보여주는데 집중했다. 마치 영수증 조각처럼 사소한 것들이지만 무심코 지나가는 많은 욕망들이 개인의 역사를 만들어 간다는 것을 보여주기 위함이다. 중요한 것은 사회의 부추김에 의해 조작된 욕망에 통제받는 것이 아닌 개인의 정신적 의미를 발견하는 일, 이것이 현대사회의 일상의 재정립을 위해 가장 필요한 것이다. 현대 소비 사회에서 자신의 존재를 인식하기 위해서는 복잡하게 얽혀있는 사회를 바라보는 개인의 역할이 더욱 강조되어야 한다. 그것이 현대 사회가 개인에게 준 자유를 제대로 활용하여 자신의 일상을 좀 더 풍요롭게 만들수 있는 방법이다. 이 작업은 있는 그대로의 일상을 보여주기 위함이다. ‘있는 그대로’라는 말은 어떠한 변명이나 숨김 없이 눈에 보이는 그 자체의 현실을 바라본다는 말이다. 있는 그대로라는 것은 때론 냉혹할 수도 있으며 때론 그간 몰랐던 혹은 잊고 있었던 것을 재발견할 수 있는 기회가 될 수도 있다. ‘나의 언어의 한계들은 나의 세계의 한계들을 의미한다.’ (비트겐슈타인, 2006b, p.92) 라는 말과 같이 내가 사용하는 단어와 글은 결국 내가 알고 있는 세계에 한정된다. 이미지 역시 내가 보고 경험한 것들을 기반으로 결국 자신의 관점에서 표현될 수 밖에 없는 것이지만 있는 그대로를 묘사하는 글과는 또 다른 의미를 지닌다. 어떤 의미에서 ‘있는 그대로’라는 말은 부르디외의 아비투스의 일부로써 제한되고 있는 것일지도 모른다. ‘가장 일어나지 않을 것 같은 실천들은 부정된 것을 거절하고 불가피한 것들을 하게끔하는 욕구의 덕목을 포함하는 일종의 즉각적인 순종적 질서에 의해 생각할 수조차 없는 것으로써 배제된다.’ (Bourdieu, 1990, p.54) 하지만 내가 가진 것들이 다른 이들에게는 생소한 것일 수도 있으며 상호간의 관계에서 보다 많은 것을 얻게 되는 사회적 행위의 특성 상 글보다 쉽고 널리 보여질 수 있는 이미지는 다른 이들에게 또 다른 관점을 제시함으로써 서로가 스스로를 확인하는데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 또한 이러한 이미지는 실재의 재현이라는 사진이라는 매체의 특성으로 더욱 ‘있는 그대로’의 모습을 보여주고 확인시키기에 적합하다. Undisclosed Desires는 말그대로 분명히 존재하지만 개인의 일상 위로 떠오르지 않는 수많은 욕망들에 관한 것이다. 많은 것들을 욕망하는 이들은 말할 것도 없거니와 어떤 이들에게는 너무나도 평범해서 욕망이 아니라고 말 할 정도로 쉽게 실현되는 욕망이라고 할지라도 욕망이 또 다른 욕망을 만들어내는 현대 사회에서 이러한 욕망이 과연 무엇을 가리키고 있는지 확인할 필요가 있다. 일상 속에서 쉽게 실현되고 마는 것일지도 모르는 사소한 것들이지만 무심코 지나가는 많은 욕망들이 개인의 역사를 만들어간다는 것을 감안할 때, 이런 욕망들이 어디로 향하는지를 확인하는 것은 앞으로의 개인의 일상을 새롭게 만들어 나가는데도 중요한 역할을 할 수 있을 것이라 생각한다. 이 작업은 이러한 것들을 추상적으로 보여줌으로써 현대인의 일상의 모호함과 숨겨진 욕망의 기호를 보여주고자 한다. 작업의 개별 제목들 역시 개인의 일상의 흔적을 따라간다.
